This kitchen renovation is part of a wider effort to restore warmth, personality, and material depth to a historic brownstone in Harlem, New York.
The original galley kitchen — bright and functional but flat — never reflected the charm of the home or the way the clients actually live. The layout worked, so instead of rebuilding the footprint, we focused on redefining the atmosphere through thoughtful finishes, natural materials, and refined detailing.
The new design introduces rich plaster walls in warm clay tones, creamy stone with soft veining, and custom millwork that blends storage with sculptural form. Built-ins and shelving take advantage of narrow brownstone proportions, creating vertical rhythm while keeping the space calm and organized. A dedicated work nook at the window turns unused space into a daily ritual spot — a place to read, work, or simply sit with a morning coffee.
Color and texture play a central role in the transformation. Deep wood, lacquered cabinetry, hand-finished plaster, and curated lighting bring a layered, lived-in quality. Sculptural furniture and artisanal glassware add moments of personality and play, balancing the quiet earthiness of the envelope. The result feels grounded and contemporary without erasing the character of the home — a warm, tactile kitchen where everyday routines feel considered.
